Types of metals in catalytic converters

Though the metals in a catalytic converter can vary, the three most important metals in a catalytic converter are rhodium, platinum and palladium. These metals are commonly used in daily products like cell phones, laptops, necklaces and rings, and other industrial purposes.

What is a catalytic converter?

A catalytic converter is a part of modern vehicles that diminish the car’s harmful emissions. The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system of the vehicle and converts the vehicle’s dangerous gasses into less harmful substances. It is placed underneath the car, in between the engine and the muffler. These vehicle parts usually last the entire lifespan of a vehicle but could be expensive to replace if necessary because of the metals used to make the catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are also often stolen from vehicles because of their worth, and their placement on vehicles makes the missing part harder to notice.

Catalytic converters are expensive to make and they hold a lot of value even when they cannot be used in a vehicle. The honeycomb shape inside of the catalytic converter makes the metal inside difficult to recover and can be very dangerous to do by one’s self. Those that work with automobiles like car dealers, junkyards and repair shops have more knowledge of the worth of a catalytic converter and how to recycle the car part to realize its value.

Is there precious metal in catalytic converters?

The catalytic converter makes use of many metals that absorb the car’s toxins, and help the performance of the catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are made with many metals, including precious metals.

Precious metals are rare metals that are extracted from the earth and hold a high monetary value. A catalytic converter is made with precious metals like copper, nickel, iron, cerium and manganese. The use and amount of each metal are dependent on the year it was made and the type of car it was made for.

Though the metals in a catalytic converter can vary, the three most important metals in a catalytic converter are rhodium, platinum and palladium. These metals are commonly used in daily products like cell phones, laptops, necklaces and rings, and other industrial purposes. The high demand for these metals heightens its value, increasing the value for catalytic converters.

What is inside a catalytic converter?

There are different precious metals used in a catalytic converter that increase its price. There are a few other metallic materials that are used to create a catalytic converter. A catalytic converter is also made with platinum, as it is the best metal to diminish toxic fumes from the vehicle. The car part also contains metal or ceramic foil that has a honeycomb shape. The honeycomb shape maximizes the surface area and is also an expensive piece of the catalytic converter. It is coated in metal and the holes are designed to capture the toxins from the vehicle to enhance the performance of the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is surrounded by a metal shield that is usually made out of stainless steel and is often magnetic.

The amount of precious metals within a catalytic converter varies case by case. It depends on the year it was made, who made the car part, and the type of car it was meant for. The amount of precious metals used in a catalytic converter is also diminishing as time goes on. Precious metalshttps://majestic-corp.com/publicacion/5 are a non-renewable resource, encouraging catalytic converter manufacturers to increase the performance of the product while lessening the number of precious metals used.

Though the number of precious metals varies with each catalytic converter, the car part still needs the metal for its best performance. The catalytic converter will inevitably have palladium and rhodium, and platinum. Palladium has a higher value and is more difficult to recover and use in products, so it is being used less and less. It can usually be replaced with platinum or used interchangeably.

How much platinum is in a catalytic converter?

It is difficult to put an exact number for the number of precious metals used in each catalytic converter. Though, it is estimated that 3-7 grams of platinum are used for a catalytic converter. Platinum is a high-quality precious metal that is used to trap the toxins in the catalytic converter. It is heat resistant and long-lasting, and it is roughly priced at $31 a gram.

How much palladium is in a catalytic converter?

Because of the diminishing use of precious metals, older catalytic converters will hold more precious metals. Currently, the amount of palladium used is 2-7 grams. This does not sound like much, but this metal has a higher value than platinum and is seen as a luxury item for catalytic converters. It is just as heat resistant and long-lasting as platinum. It is placed at roughly $72 a gram.

How much rhodium is in a catalytic converter?

A recently made catalytic converter usually holds 1-2 grams of rhodium. It is usually paired with palladium to eliminate more toxins. Rhodium is used as a way to eliminate fumes coming from the vehicle. It is a necessity within a catalytic converter and is worth around $287.

Wrapping up

The precious metals used in a catalytic converter hold a lot of value, and the use of palladium, rhodium, and platinum are very consistent. The amount used for each metal is truly dependent on when it was made,  what care it was made for, and who manufactured it. This makes it difficult to name a singular price for one catalytic converter. Though knowing what is in a catalytic converter, like its many metals used and honeycomb interior, can give a better idea of what all goes into a catalytic converter.
